You don't have to plug your gas port, but it's probably nicer if you do, especially if it's a dedicated 22lr build. Or...
I read that after you use the CMMG kit to shoot some 22lr, shoot a couple rounds of 223/556 to blow out the extra carbon build up from shooting 22lr.
