====================

The Defense Distributed AR-15 Lower v5 is not the first printed AR lower, but it was by far the most widely shared AR lower design in the early days of guncad.

Defense Distributed’s work on AR lowers started within months of the Wiki Weapon project’s announcement (2). Initial work involved testing an unmodified HaveBlue lower paired with a 5.7x28mm AR upper, which withstood six shots of fire before breaking the buffer tower (3). This test actually received some media attention (4), with some sources mocking deeming the design a “printed six-shooter”.

Work began on further reinforcing the lower and subsequent videos (5) demonstrated the progress, showing more powerful calibers and higher round counts.

The Version 5 lower, the last publicly released version in the series, was released (6) in February 2013. This design, and likely previous versions, were not iterations on a single platform but instead “clean starts”, applying techniques learned to a fresh reference model.

In testing the v5 worked perfectly, firing over 600 rounds and, as Wilson notes, “the test ended when we ran out of ammunition, but this lower could easily withstand 1,000 rounds.” A release video (7) demonstrates the lower magdumping a 100 round drum magazine. This was by far the most rounds accumulated on a .223 lower, and possibly on any lower up to that point.

Visually the v5 lower still appears quite similar to a milspec AR lower, with the most obvious changes being a “squared off” buffer tower.

After release, the DDv5 lower was widely downloaded and shared throughout the burgeoning guncad community, and it formed the original basis of several remixes.
