I've done exactly what you are asking, but with a cast iron NPT fitting. Look at the cover photo for the widebody harlot (sailing) for reference.
The cast fitting is cheaper and easier than what you are describing.

I'm not sure what you're saying here. The widebody harlot doesn't look like a threaded pipe. Did you place a barrel liner inside your cast iron fitting and then thread the outside of the fitting to 1/2x28? That's what I'm trying to achieve.
