I really like the .22 k hornets performance, efficiency, and low report. Sadly it has terrible brass that crushes really easily in a reloading press. .22 spitfire (5.7 johnson) is pretty close, has thicker brass, and readly available magazines.

Correct. However, shooting any sort of anti-personnel round out of a 37mm launcher legally changes it from a signal device (not legally a gun at all) into a NFA Destructive Device. Meaning it’s a felony in the US if it’s not tax stamped and registered.
