More truly DIY designs that use non gun parts. This future-proofs against tyrannical legislation. As mentioned by an earlier poster, hybrid designs with a bit of metal work/reinforcing for longevity. I still think truly DIY designs in 9mm and 5.56mm are the holy grail, to go with 12g and 22lr. The most common, accessible calibres in other words.
This will be a hot take but I think the community is too conservative with materials. I understand that printed bang sticks are inherently dangerous and it's best to be on the safe side, but there was a guy on reddit who printed launchers out of ASA only and got shit for that despite having working proofs. There even was a guy who posted a beautiful Urutau made from Creality Hyper PLA-CF and claimed over 100 rounds without signs of damage. OG FG…
Fully DIY 9mm handguns aren't viable yet. Simple blowback designs like the FGC9 don't scale down because you need about 500g of bolt weight. Until someone comes up with a viable locking mechanism, PDW size is about as compact as you can get.
