A ballista is an ancient torsion-powered siege weapon, a type of giant crossbow, that was developed in ancient Greece and later used by the Romans. It used twisted ropes to store energy, which was then released to hurl large projectiles, such as bolts (spear-like missiles) or heavy stones, with great accuracy and force. Ballistas were used against fortified structures and enemy formations, capable of penetrating thick walls from hundreds of meters away.
