Does the issue of the hammer getting stuck behind the bolt only happen when actually firing and doesn't really occur while hand cycling?
Correct, the bolt carrier needs to travel all the way to the rear before it can get stuck behind the hammer, which is difficult to replicate with the recoil…

A majority of lower parts kits don't come with a locking block.
You're going to need tools as well, a punch and hammer. If you're not getting a complete slide you need a firing pin sleeve install tool, but you can 3d print that.
Edit: also a 3mm and 4mm drill bit to clean up the holes. If I'm not mistak…
