The FamAR is going along smoothly and I have been putting together a list of the required parts. The build relies on a 3.5" compact buffer tube. The stock is 1" longer than the real Famas as I used a buffer that does not require modifications to the bolt carrier. This is so that I can use a left or right ejecting bolt carrier. I am also using an 18" barrel, wheras the FAMAS has a 19.2" barrel, which is a round number in metric. Therefore the OAL is roughly the same. I am also pleased to announce KM tactical has a slick side left ejecting upper available. This is some of my progress so far. Changes and features are as follows:
-The FamAR will have options for bolt hold open. It will be accessible through a hole in the cheek rest. It can be made without it to more closely resemble the FAMAS, which does not have any bolt hold open features. The rather violent lever delay action would surely break any attempt at a bolt hold open device on the original. Most period firearms do not have this feature either.
-The FamAR will not have rifle grenade sights. My reference model is a semi auto import version without these features owned by a fellow forum member. The FAMAS F1 has two different rifle grenade sights and the G2 retains the one under the sights. I may revisit this, as the FamAR is capable of launching rifle grenades with standard M16 blanks.
-The FamAR I am making will come in a full length, and SMG variant. The prototype SMG variant is the same up to the handguard and barrel, which abruptly end after the charging handle. The full length will use a 13.5 free float Mlok handguard under it with a 16-20" barrel, and the SMG will use a 10" handguard with an 11-13" barrel.
-I will at some point make an F1 style lower handguard, but I will not attempt the F1 top handguard (with built in rifle grenade sight front) nor the F1 rear end, which takes a proprietary magazine. However the Brownells 25rd straight AR magazine closely resembles the original Famas magazine.
The flat top Valorise' and FELIN variants will be released in the full length and SMG length model.
