The MKb556(S) is a MKb42(H) style conversion kit for the STG556(S) that is inspired by the first prototype of what would later become the definitive assault rifle from which the name and most features are derived, the unquestionable inspiration for all military rifles in the western world.
The original Maschinenkarabiner 42 was developed by the Haenel company and its designer Hugo Schmeisser, then 58 year old designer of the MP18 submachinegun used in the first world war. It was entered for selection as an intermediate caliber infantry rifle for military use, but the original MKb42 was open bolt and while this increases cooling and makes the rifle appropriate for long strings of fire, the downside is that it is not accurate when attempting to take single shots at medium to long range, as the entire reciprocating mass of the bolt moves forward before the gun fires, then backwards to reset after firing. The military determined that the amount of ammunition that could be provided did not warrant the upsides of the open bolt firearm.
The MKb42(H) was immediately produced and fielded, but replaced with MP44s or STG44s as they could be produced. While not as iconic as the later STG44, the MKb is a more ready contender for the title of first assault rifle, and is a grail gun for many collectors.
The kit includes:
-The MKb forend, which has a dummy gas expansion chamber and a different front sight base. Cosmetic only.
-The MKb FCG. This FCG can use standard drop in AR15 triggers, which makes the MKb FRT and Super Safety Compatible. Note that fitting and tuning will be required for all forced reset style triggers and accessories.
-The MKb Charging Handle and Receiver. This receiver is marked differently and has a notch for the charging handle to hold the bolt open. It can be HK slapped. The other parts work on existing STG556(S) receivers but the charging handle needs the MKb cutout.
-The Bayonet lug. The bayonet lug gas block fits both models and fits a standard AR15 M7 bayonet lug. A Mauser compatible lug is in progress. I tried to make this fit both but the reinforced FSB blocks the Mauser bayonet.
-Reinforced dust cover door. The base model STG dust cover does not print well and is the first failure point if the gun is made of cheaper material. It fits interchangeably.
